Orion Blue

He goes by the name of Orion Blue, though his mother still calls him Steve. His passion is for music. He left home convinced his sound, his words, the soul he poured into his compositions, would make him his fortune.

Life has not been so easy for Orion since he set out on his musical mission. Playing on street corners for spare change does not pay well, and many a night he spent huddled behind his guitar case in a dirty alley, hoping the next day would bring his big break.

When he was invited to join the commune and share in their food, in their shelter, in their lives, he jumped at the chance. He hasn’t regretted this move. It led him to the love of his life, Moon Flower, and ultimately, to their child Granola.

Orion wants to do right by Moon Flower and Granola. He wants to provide for them, he wants to give them the best life he can imagine. Yet he cannot give up his music. His only hope is that Moon Flower will stand by him until his big break comes along. He knows his time is coming soon. He’s sure of it, every day.

He traded his old, beat-up guitar, his watch, and a weeks’ worth of change collected in his guitar case for a nearly-new Yamapaw guitar, and has already begun to catch attention. The new guitar has a richer, deeper, fuller sound, making his formerly good songs sound great. The proof is in the guitar case. He’s bringing in more money each day. He knows he can give his family what they deserve and still make his music.

It’s only a matter of time.

Orion Blue is completely handmade, from my own original design. Orion’s body is made from the classic Rockford red heel socks used for sock monkey dolls. His hair is made from yarn. His shirt is cotton/poly blend and his pants are corduroy, trimmed with 1970s woven trim and applique. He wears a suede fringed vest adorned with a vintage metal button. His sandals are hand made from black leather. His metal peace symbol is a vintage 1970s zipper pull hanging from gold elastic thread. His hair is held off his face by a red cotton bandana. He wears rimless round glasses with thick lenses because he needs them to see.

His body is stuffed with polyester fiberfill. His nose and hand-painted eyes are made from felt. He has sculpted features - mouth, hands and feet. Orion stands 23" from his topknot to his toes.

Orion Blue comes with a completely handmade guitar and case. The guitar was created using Styrofoam sheeting shaped and formed, then covered with a layer of glue and tissue paper, then masking tape, cardboard, craft foam, and more masking tape, before it was hand-painted and sealed with a high gloss. Polymer clay was used to create portions, as well as plastic beads and metal jewelry findings. The strings are thread. The strap is made from retro-style woven trim and leather. The guitar measures 11 ¾” long. The case is made from cardboard, craft foam, and fabric. The hinges are leather and the catches are metal. The handle is made from copper wire and leather. The case is adorned with groovy 1970s style stickers. The case measures 13 1/8” long. Included in the case is polymer clay “money” and a tiny hand-made guitar pick.
